Van Wieren and Henderson Nab WCHA Weekly Honors

UMD Bulldogs "ALLETE" Moments: Competition

Throughout this year, UMD Athletics is partnering with Minnesota Power, ALLETE to highlight the Bulldogs accomplishments in the 3 C's: Classroom, Competition, Community.

Two University of Minnesota Duluth women's hockey players earned Western Collegiate Hockey Association weekly honors Monday -- Clara Van Wieren was named the WCHA's Forward of the Week, while Tova Henderson was selected WCHA Defenseman of the Week.

Van Wieren posted her second career hat trick Friday night, figuring in over half of the Bulldogs goals against Minnesota State Univeristy, Mankato with five total points and crucial in the Bulldogs all important sweep over the Mavericks. The Okemos, Mich. native was tied for the league league with three goals over the weekend, and trailed only teammate Mary Kate O'Brien for the second highest plus/minus rating in the WCHA with +5. Van Wieren also ranked second in face-off wins (26) and averaged 13 a game, while also ranked second in total points (5) on the weekend, and only teammate Olivia Wallin averaged more points a game (2.50) in the league. The graduate forward is now in the midst of a four-game scoring streak where she has posted four goals and four assists for eight points over that span

Henderson tied for the most points of any of the league blueliners over the weekend (3), while posting a league-best +4 plus/minus rating. The product of Richmond, B. C. averaged 1.50 points per game and helped UMD sweep MSU, and was part of a penalty kill unit that held the Mavericks to just one power play goal in six attempts. Henderson is in the midst of a four-game scoring streak where she has recorded five assists over that span.

While this is Van Wieren's first WCHA weekly award of the year, Henderson was also named the league's defensive player of week back on Nov. 25.

The Bulldogs will close out the regular season in a battle for third place in the WCHA this weekend when they travel to Ridder Arena in Minneapolis, Minn. to face the University of Minnesota. Game-times are set for 6:00 p.m. Friday night and 2:00 p.m. Saturday.
