The University of Minnesota Duluth dominated action on the diamond Saturday at the Drury Softball Classic in Springfield, Mo., with a 10-2 win over the University of Wisconsin Parkside in six innings and a 9-1 victory over Newman University in five innings.
With the double header sweep, the Bulldogs have the opportunity tomorrow to finish their fourth straight weekend of play above the .500-mark with at least a win in one of their final two games. UMD pushed its record to 13-5 in non-conference play to start the 2025 season. It has the chance to extend its winning streak to four games for the first time all season with a sweep tomorrow before partaking in the Spring Games in Florida next week.
Newman lost to UMD for the second straight day, both by the run-rule in the fifth inning. The Bulldogs also avenged their lost from Parkside last weekend to force a season-series deciding game tomorrow afternoon when the two clubs meet for the final time.
The Bulldog pitching duo of junior
Allyssa Williams and sophomore
Maddy Walsh completely overpowered the Rangers and the Jets allowing only three runs while combining to strike out eight batters. Williams whipped up her team-leading sixth win while Walsh moved to an unblemished 3-0 record in the circle on the year.Â
After a scoreless first inning between the UMD and Parkside, both squads got on the board with the Bulldogs taking a 4-2 lead. Williams slammed the door shut as UMD continued its scoring pace adding two in the third, two in the fourth, two in the sixth to notch its sixth game of the season with double-digits runs. Senior infielder
Nicole Schmitt had a day at the plate as she launched a two-run homer in the fourth and walked off the game with a two-RBI double in the sixth to force the mercy rule.Â
It was more the same against the Jets. Walsh surrendered her lone run in the fifth, losing her shutout bid in the shorten contest. The Duluth, Minn., native allowed just three hits on the afternoon and allowed one base runner past second base, which has on the lead off double in the final frame.Â
Walsh was given immediate run support by her lineup. After being shutout last week, UMD had its first four batters score to start the game with Schmitt causing the destruction again with a three-RBI, bases-clearing double, and would later score on a sac fly. The Bulldogs would go on to extend their lead to 9-0 before the Rangers plated their only run of the contest.
UMD will play Parkside at 11:00 a.m. tomorrow then will finish tournament play with host Drury University at 1:00 p.m.
