UMD Baseball Swept in Day Two Doubleheader Against Augustana

The University of Minnesota Duluth baseball team closed out their four game series with the Augustana University Vikings today, losing both games in the day two doubleheader at Ronken Field in Sioux Falls.

Game One: UMD (2) - AU (3)

The Vikings were first on the scoreboard to start the afternoon doubleheader, driving one across home on a RBI single in the top of the first to take an ealy 1-0 lead.

The Bulldogs evened up the scoreline in the bottom of the third inning, cashing in on a leadoff solo bomb from Henry Bushey over the right field wall.

AU regained the lead in the top of the fifth, moving ahead 3-1 after cashing in on a RBI double from Troy Berg and scoring another on a wild pitch before the end of the inning.

UMD added one more run onto their effort, driving in a run in the bottom of the fifth on a sacrifice fly from Joey Flom to score Michael Gabbard. However, it would prove to be too little too late as the Bulldogs fell in game one, 3-2.

Game Two: UMD (2) - AU (13)

A pair of RBI hits and a run on a wild pitch meant an early 3-0 lead for Augustana in the first inning of game two. The momentum continued for the Vikings with a seven run rally in the top of the second, bookended by a three run homer from Joshua Koskie, to put the Bulldogs at a 10-0 deficit.

UMD started to eat into the lead in the bottom of the second, getting on the board with an RBI single from Bushey to score Gabbard.

AU increased the deficit back to double digits in the top of the third, adding another three runs to move ahead 13-1.

A bases loaded walk for Gabbard in the bottom of the third inning added one more run to the board for the Bulldogs. The two teams held each other scoreless throughout the final four innings of the day, marking a 13-2 loss for UMD in the final game of the series.

Looking Ahead

Bulldog baseball (12-13, 8-8 NSIC) heads to Nebraska next weekend to take on the Wayne State College Wildcats in a four game series. First pitch against the Wildcats is currently set for Friday, Apr. 4, at 1:30 PM.
