Down Goes Augie! UMD Softball Powers by No. 10 Vikings For First Sweep in Nearly a Decade

Coming into today it has been 3,268 days since the University of Minnesota Duluth last swept Augustana University in the regular season.

Well... Not anymore.

It took nearly nine years since the Bulldogs swept their conference foe in a pair of one-run decisions at Junction Avenue Field in Duluth, Minn. That streak was busted Saturday morning at Bowden Field in Sioux Falls, S.D. where UMD blew past the No. 10 Vikings 9-1 in five innings before going on to complete the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader sweep with a come-from-behind 4-3 win.

UMD (25-11, 5-3 NSIC) ended the week going 5-1 in conference play after it rattled Augustana (25-9, 7-3 NSIC) in the opener. For the first time this season, the Vikings lost via the mercy run rule then got blindsided as the Bulldogs stormed back with four runs in the sixth inning to overcome a 3-0 deficit to complete the sweep.

The day got off to a thunderous start as the Bulldog erupted for three home runs and tallied nine hits with junior infielder Ava Johnson pacing the club with three hits and a team-high four RBI. Sophomore Khendal Johnson gave UMD a 1-0 lead in the second as she belted the first of three UMD home runs. Leading 3-1, sophomore outfielder Sierra Thomas collected her first career home run to put the Bulldogs ahead 5-1. The following inning Ava Johnson crushed her second home run of the season to left field to extend the lead to six. Johnson wasn't done as she followed up with two more RBI in the fifth on a single to right field.

The three round-trippers and nine runs were the most allowed by the Vikings this season. Augustana's pitching was dominant leading up to the day as it gave up only a then-season best three runs in a seven-inning regulation game this spring.

That was busted a second time by the Bulldogs.

In the rematch, Augustana finally broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of fifth with three runs all with two outs. The next half-inning, UMD put together its own two-out rally. Freshman Taylor Tschida got the Bulldogs on the board. The St. Michael, Minn., native ripped a pinch-hit RBI single to score freshman infielder Taryn Christopher.

Junior outfielder Morgan McMillan provided the biggest aftershock. The Roseville, Calif., native didn't wait much time, whomped a go-ahead three-run shot to right field the next at-bat to take a 4-3 lead. Senior pitcher Allison Luoma closed the door, picking up her ninth win in a complete-game five strikeout effort.

UMD returns to the diamond Tuesday, April 1 at the University of Minnesota Crookston. First pitch of the NSIC doubleheader is scheduled to start at 2:00 p.m.
