UMD Bulldogs "ALLETE" Moments: Competition
Throughout this year, UMD Athletics is partnering with Minnesota Power, ALLETE to highlight the Bulldogs accomplishments in the 3 C's: Classroom, Competition, Community.
Senior infielder Nicole Schmitt and junior catcher Kendal Jenkins earned Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference First Team All-Conference recognition and junior pitcher Allyssa Williams attained NSIC All-Defensive Team honors announced by the league on Tuesday.
Schmitt was selected as a first team member for the third straight season, the first Bulldog since Duluth native Trya Kerr (2011-13), while Jenkins became the 59th player in program history to receive NSIC First Team distinction.
Nicole Schmitt went 34-for-85 with three doubles, nine home runs, 23 RBI and 27 runs in 26 conference games. She carried a slash line of .400/.469/.753. Among the conference ranks, the Verona, Wis. native was tied for the league lead in runs scored, second in home runs and slugging percentage, third in RBIs, sixth in hits and on-base percentage, and eighth in batting average. She also had 11 stolen bases, which was tied for third among the NSIC. This past weekend, Schmitt set the single-season program record for home runs (18), RBIs (68) and total bases (143). Schmitt had 12 multi-hit games including a pair of two bomb performances against Northern State and Minot State.
Kendal Jenkins collected her first NSIC honor after hitting .342 in 26 league contests. She had 11 doubles in NSIC play which has tied for the league lead. The Hastings, Minn. native has 19 doubles overall this spring which is No. 1 in the NSIC and No. 10 among the Division II landscape. She racked up three home runs and 16 RBI and 10 walks. Jenkins finished with season with hits in nine of the last 10 games including six straight matches with at least two hits. Her best day at the plate came in the doubleheader against Sioux Falls, where the Hastings H.S. product went 4-for-8 with three doubles, a home run and four RBI in the sweep over the Cougars.
Allyssa Williams became the first player to attain All-Defensive merit since 2021 -- when it was formerly called the NSIC Gold Glove Team -- when Taylor Koehnen locked down second base. Williams is the second Bulldog pitcher to laid acclaim to her defensive prowess around the circle joining Sam Hartmann to secured the honor in 2016. The product of Yuba City H.S. posted a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage in 27 chances. The Yuba City, Calif. native had 26 assists and a putout in 12 conference games including a double play. She only allowed 10 stolen bases and had six caught stealing. In addition, Williams went 9-3 in the circle with a 3.00 ERA. She tossed 50 strikeouts in 63 innings including a shutout against Concordia-St. Paul.
