Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

No. 6 Bulldogs Offensively Bite Back in 5-3 Win Over St. Cloud State

For hockey fans critical of the No. 6 University of Minnesota Duluth men's hockey team's results on Saturday nights in the first half of the season, the Bulldogs would like to present a brand new Exhibit A.

The Bulldogs scored early and steadily through the entirety of their NCHC showdown with St. Cloud State University Saturday night en route to a 5-3 win at the Herbs Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn. The win is the sixth on a Saturday this season, and more importantly, the 17th overall to improve UMD to 17-6-0.

The Bulldogs started furiously and fast – so fast, in fact, that Max Plante's opening goal was just one second slower then the program's record for fastest goal to open a game. Plante's strike from the left circle off a pass from his brother Zam was just 12 seconds into the game, and was the lone goal of the opening period.

The Huskies bit back with an equalizer from Gavyn Thoreson 5:33 into the second, but UMD again pulled ahead on Callum Arnott's snipe from the right side circle at the 10:03 mark.

SCSU biggest push came with back-to-back goals just over 1:25 apart. Verner Miettinen knotted it at 2-2 at 13:12, and then Max Smolinski helped the Huskies take a 3-2 lead just under 90 seconds later.

But the Bulldogs nationally-leading power play need just one skate with the man advantage to pull even, and it came in the form of 1-of-2 Zam Plante goals on the evening. Arnott's backhanded Plante the puck from one pipe to the other, and Plante one-time it on the backstep at the 1:21 mark.

Plante then nailed any talk of an attempts SCSU comeback sweep shut when his brother Max won a puck behind the net, fed Jayson Shaugabay who redirected it to Zam Plante on the post again for his second of the night at 15:40 for the 4-3 lead.

With 27 seconds left in the third, Zam Plante tracked down a Huskies defenseman and picked the puck clean, sending it to a wide open Shaugabay in the slot with no goaltender for the 5-3 final and three NCHC points.

Sophomore goaltender Ethan Dahlmeir made 20 saves in his second start in net for the Bulldogs so far this season, while the Bulldogs outshot SCSU 29-23 in the game. UMD's power play went 1-of-3 on the night while holding the Huskies scoreless in four attempts.

The Bulldogs will head back home to AMSOIL Arena next weekend to host the defending NCAA champion Western Michigan University. The Friday-Saturday series will get underway at 7:07 p.m. Friday night.
