After 13 games, the No. 8 University of Minnesota Duluth women's hockey team finally had its unbeaten streak against No.15 St. Cloud State University snapped Saturday afternoon, a 5-2 loss inside AMSOIL Arena in Duluth, Minn.
Â
"I think everyone, when they come to play us, gives us their very best, and St. Cloud definitely played us hard tonight," said UMD head coach Laura Schuler. "I liked our first period, I thought we came out really strong, and then we just mentally broke down in the second period. We have got to be better in those situations, to be able to bounce back, but I thought our third was okay, obviously went for it and faced a great goalie again, and like I said, I think St. Cloud played us really hard tonight."
Â
Schuler may have changed out some players in the top two lines Saturday, but it was the old combination of Danielle Burgen and Caitlin Kraemer that got the scoring underway just 2:35 into the game. Burgen's backhand pass to Kraemer, who one-timed it past Emilia Kyrkko in the slot for her 11th goal of the season handed the Bulldogs the early 1-0 lead.
Â
The Huskies would use a power play just 24 seconds into the second period to equalize, and then 13 seconds later, SCSU took a 2-1 lead – a lead UMD would never recover from.Â
Â
Maria Mikaelyan scored her second goal of the game and second in a row at 8:46 of the third period to give the Huskies a 3-1 lead, and SCSU added an empty net goal at 16:46 to stretch it to 4-1.Â
Â
Thea Johansson scored with 45 seconds left in the third to make it 4-2, but again SCSU netted an empty net goal with 32 seconds remaining for the 5-2 final.
Â
UMD goaltender Eve Gascon made 26 saves on the afternoon, while Emilia Kyrkko had 37 for the Huskies. The Bulldogs went 0-of-2 on their power play, SCSU was 1-of-3.
Â
The Bulldogs, who are now just 2-6-2 at home so far this season (all against NCAA ranked teams), is now 12-10-2 overall and .500 at 8-8-2 in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. UMD travels to Mankato, Minn. next weekend to face Minnesota State University Mankato in a WCHA Friday-Saturday series that gets underway at 6:02 p.m.
