The University of Minnesota Duluth men's basketball team snapped a four-game losing streak in a colossal 71-50 victory over Winona State University on Friday.
Kole Hanson led the Bulldogs' scoring efforts with 16 points. Hanson also tallied one steal, one assist, and three rebounds while shooting 46.2% (6-13) from the field, 25% (2-8) beyond the arc, and 66.7% (2-3) from the free throw line.
The first five minutes saw the Bulldogs keep ahead narrowly of the Warriors on an 8-5 scoring run powered by
Nick Katona (3),
Mattie Thompson (3), and
Caleb Siwek (2). By the 9:52 mark, UMD took an eight-point lead, holding WSU to only two free throws for a 15-7 lead.
A 9-2 scoring run, lifted by Thompson's five points, widened the gap to 24-9 with 5:58 remaining before halftime. The final five minutes saw the Warriors keep pace with the Bulldogs' 11 points, with Hanson leading the way with six points, as the score closed out at 35-19 into the halftime break.
Coming out of halftime, Winona was the first to score, but the Bulldogs would expand the lead on a 9-4 scoring run off the efforts of Hanson (6) and Thompson (3) to lead 44-23 with 14:44 to go. Over the next six minutes, WSU would chip the lead down slightly on a 12-10 scoring run, overpowering the scoring efforts of
Daniel Molhoek (5), Siwek (3), and
Noah Paulson (2).
With the Bulldog lead at 54-35, UMD would close the match on a 17-15 scoring run with Siwek (8),
Owen Leach (4),
Wyatt McBeth (3), and Paulson (2) outpacing the Warriors for a final score of 71-50.
Overall, the Bulldogs shot their best in the first half with a 56% (13-23) from the field and 45% (5-11) beyond the arc. UMD narrowly won the overall rebound battle with 36-34, while Katona led the team individually with 10 rebounds.
The Bulldogs continue the homestand tomorrow, facing Concordia University St. Paul at 5:30 p.m. inside Romano Gymnasium.
