The University of Minnesota Duluth men's basketball team faltered on the road in 77-70 fashion against Wayne State College on Friday.
Leading the scoring effort for the Bulldogs was
Caleb Siwek with 19 points while shooting 50% (7-14) from the field and 71.4% (5-7) beyond the arc. He also tallied three assists and two defensive rebounds.
Entering the first half, UMD battled to a three-point lead six minutes in, Siwek (5),
Noah Paulson (4), and
Nick Katona (2) combining for the 11-8 lead.
Wyatt McBeth and
Daniel Molhoek led a 9-4 scoring run to lift a larger 20-12 lead over the Wildcats with 8:57 remaining.
The UMD defense began to stagnate as WSC began a 22-10 scoring run to erase the lead, with Siwek scoring six of the Bulldogs' 10 points before the halftime break.
With the Wildcats leading the Bulldogs 34-30 coming out of halftime, UMD went on a 13-9 scoring run to tie the game at 43-43 with 15:57 to go. By the 10:48 mark, the Bulldogs completed a 10-5 scoring run to take a five-point lead over the Wildcats, off Hanson's six points and
Jackson Fowlkes four for a 54-48 lead.
The Wildcats responded with a 16-6 scoring run to overtake the Bulldogs over the next five minutes to force a 64-59 lead with six minutes remaining. WSC held off UMD from there on a 15-11 scoring run to force a 77-50 loss to the Bulldogs.
Overall, the Bulldogs shot 52.9% (27-51) from the field, 50% (12-24) beyond the arc, and 50% (4-8) from the free throw line. UMD lost the total rebounding battle 29-21, with
Mattie Thompson, Katona,
Daniel Molhoek, and McBeth each earning three rebounds.
The Bulldogs continue competing on the road tomorrow against Augustana University at 5:30 p.m. inside the Elmen Center.
