University of Minnesota Duluth men's hockey junior defenseman
Ty Hanson and freshman goaltender
Carl Axelsson scooped up weekly National Collegiate Hockey Conference honors Tuesday, with Hanson earning his third NCHC Defenseman of the Week honor and Axelsson picking up NCHC Goaltender of the Week accolades.
Hanson is off to hot start -- an NCAA-best start -- and added it to it against Bemidji State University over the weekend with four points, including three goals. The Hermantown, Minn. native had a power play tally and game-winning goal, and had back-to-back multiple points games, including a two-game effort in UMD's 3-0 win over the Beavers Saturday night. Hanson was also +4 -- a league-high, had six shots on goal and was part of UMD's penalty kill unit that kept BSU scoreless on four power play attempts. The captain currently owns the second most goals in all of the NCAA (7) and is fourth among all skaters and leads all defenseman with 12 points in eight games.
Axelsson earned his first league honor after playing 119:38 of scoreless hockey. The product of Danderyd, Sweden led the NCHC in goals against (0.50) and saves percentage (.980) and averaged 24 saves a game. Axelsson also earned a shutout Saturday night and was 22 seconds away from earning one on Friday night against the Beavers. The rookie netminder currently owns the lowest GAA (0.81) in the NCAA among all goaltenders that have played three or more games and is tied for the most shutouts (2).
The Bulldogs will head to Colorado Springs, Col. this weekend to face Colorado College. The Friday-Saturday Series gets underway both nights at 8:00 p.m CST.
