The University of Minnesota Duluth softball team tallied a 6-4 record after earning its first shutout of the season in a 7-0 win over Roosevelt University and then faltering 6-2 to Ferris State University.
Entering game one, UMD broke out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning after
Daphne Evans and
Morgan McMillan walked to set up a passed ball situation that allowed Evans to score. Then Khendal Jenkins brought home McMillan on a sacrifice fly for a 2-0 lead.
Emmie Sylvie-Cochran struck out the Roosevelt bats to allow the Bulldogs to push a 5-0 lead in the top of the second. It all started with a double from
Ava Johnson and a single from
Lauren Jenkins. A single from
Noelle Krumrie and a double from
Sierra Thomas sealed the 5-0 lead.
Evans and Thomas brought in the final two runs in the fourth inning. Sylvia-Cochran continued to keep the board empty for the Lakers, allowing only two more hits for the rest of the game, giving the Bulldogs their first shutout victory of the season.
Ferris State got the best of the Bulldogs in game two. UMD would score in the top of the first inning with Evans hitting a double to allow Thomas to bring her home on a sacrifice fly. That would be the only time the Bulldogs enjoyed the lead as FSU brought in three runs on three hits off Allysa Williams.
From then on, with Ferris leading 3-1, the Bulldogs were unable to score until the fourth inning when
Ava Johnson was able to bring
Khendal Johnson home on a sacrifice fly to bring the game within one.
Ferris State would drive in two more runs off Williams before one more run was put past
Ashley Mandell in relief to seal the Bulldogs' fourth loss of the season.
Sylvia-Cochran advances to a 3-0 record after dealing a career-high 15 strikeouts and only allowing two hits. After game two, Williams fell to a 3-2 record after allowing five runs with three strikeouts.
The Bulldogs face another two opponents tomorrow night, facing Truman State University first at 6 p.m., with Wayne State University to follow at 8 p.m.
