The University of Minnesota Duluth men's basketball team earned its second victory of the season over the University of Mary this time on the road, in 82-70 fashion.
Leading the scoring effort for the Bulldogs was a powerful effort from both UMD forwards,
Noah Paulson (20) and
Mattie Thompson (16). Paulson hit 70% (7-10) from the field and 100% (6-6) in free throws, while Thompson hit 85.7% (6-7), 66.7% (2-3) beyond the arc, and 40% (2-5) from the free throw line. Thompson also added six rebounds (three offensive), five assists, one block, and three steals.
Entering the first half, the Bulldogs jumped to an 11-10 lead with 13:52 to go off the scoring of Paulson (4), Thompson (3),
Nick Katona (2), and
Caleb Siwek (2). Over the next three minutes, the Marauders responded with a 15-11 scoring run to get ahead of the Bulldogs 25-22.
By the 6:07 mark, UMary completed an 8-6 scoring run to expand the lead to 33-28. Paulson and
Jackson Fowlkes tied the game back up with a combined seven points for an even 35 score with four minutes to go. UMD's defense locked UMary down to three points before the halftime break, allowing Paulson,
Kole Hanson, Siwek, Thompson, and Fowlkes to combine to bring a 48-38 lead into the halftime break.
Entering the final half, UMD continued to expand the lead on a 17-10 scoring run, which included an 11-point effort from Thompson for a 65-48 lead with 10:20 left. With two minutes remaining, the Marauders reached within 10 points of the Bulldogs after an 18-12 scoring run. Hanson and
Owen Leach combined for five final points for UMD to keep UMary down at 82-70.
Overall, UMD nearly doubled the points in the paint over UMary, 44-24. As a unit, they hit 47.6% (30-63) from the field, 29.4% (5-17) beyond the arc, and 73.9% (17-23) from the free throw line. Leading the individual rebounds was Katona with eight total.
The Bulldogs head to Minot State University for a Saturday matchup inside the MSU Dome. Tipoff is set for 3:30 p.m.
