The University of Minnesota Duluth baseball team secured a 5–4 victory over the University of Jamestown in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play on Monday at Minnetonka Veterans Field in Minnetonka, Minn.
A decisive four-run surge in the eighth inning was crucial for the Bulldogs, securing the win after trailing earlier in the game.
The Jimmies took an early lead with a solo home run in the top of the second inning, and in the third inning, Jamestown extended their lead with two runs, courtesy of singles by Thomas and Maldonado, to bring the tally to 3-0 after three innings.
UMD got on the board in the seventh inning when
Henry Bushey walked and later scored on a triple by
Thomas Hanson, but Jamestown added another run with a homer by Warcken, making it 4-1 at the end of the seventh.
The Bulldogs rallied in the bottom of the eighth.
Sam Kliber singled, marking the second consecutive game he recorded at least two hits, and
Troy Lynch drove in a run with a single.
Logan Myers followed with another single, and
Garrett Stauffacher doubled, driving in two more runs and continuing his streak of at least two RBIs in two consecutive games. Hanson's double brought home Stauffacher, to complete the comeback and tie the game at 4-4. By the end of the inning, the Bulldogs led 5-4.
Caden Klebba closed out the game by retiring Jamestown in order in the ninth, securing a 5–4 victory for UMD.
Jalen Pascal delivered a solid start, pitching a season-high seven innings while striking out four batters and allowing four runs on seven hits. Klebba provided effective relief, pitching two scoreless innings without surrendering a hit or walk, and securing the win with a 17-pitch outing.
Stauffacher recorded two RBIs and added a double in the game. Hanson also contributed with two RBIs, including a double and a triple, while Lynch tallied one hit and one RBI while scoring once. The Bulldogs have also now achieved at least nine hits in four consecutive games, and have run up at least three doubles in two consecutive games.
UMD (11-26, 10-15) will next play on Thursday in Bemidji, Minn. The games, originally slated for Wednesday, will get underway Thursday at the BSU Baseball Field at 1:30 and 3:30 p.m.
