The University of Minnesota Duluth soccer team will continue its out of league play against a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference foe in St. Cloud State University this Saturday. The Bulldogs and Huskies will meet inside Husky Stadium in St. Cloud, Minn. with kickoff set now for 11:00 a.m. due to impending heat.
 

GAME PREVIEW vs. St. Cloud State: UMD is 17-17-8 against the Huskies all-time, and is looking to pick up its first win against SCSU since the 2017 season. That 1-0 win at home on Sept. 12, 2017 has been followed by the longest-losing streak to the Huskies in program history – 10-straight games, with four of those shutouts by SCSU. The Bulldogs are also looking for their first road win against St. Cloud State since the 2013 NCAA Tournament run season where UMD last defeated the Huskies inside Husky Stadium by a score of 4-1 – also the most goals scored by a UMD team against SCSU in 13 seasons. Last season, UMD faced the Huskies twice, losing 2-1 in Duluth, Minn. on Sept. 20, and again on Oct. 12 in St. Cloud by the same score. 
 

In the October contest, the Bulldogs struck first on a multiple player effort off a corner kick that finally resulted in a Kati Beaver goal in the 23rd minute. That UMD lead lasted until the 57:20 mark when Darby Allen buried a penalty kick to draw SCSU even at 1-1. The Huskies scored the eventual game-winner in the 78th minute, a quick transition one-timed strike from Linsey Trapino to push SCSU into the first, and final goal of the game.


Then senior goalkeeper Kaycee Chavez had seven saves in the game on nine shots. SCSU outshot the Bulldogs overall 14-10 and on goal 9-4, despite UMD having outshot the Huskies overall 8-2 in the opening half. UMD also had a 5-2 corner kick advantage in the game. 


This season, SCSU owns an identical record to the Bulldogs against the exact same teams after losing to Northern Michigan 3-2 last Friday night before defeating Michigan Tech University 3-0 on Sunday on the road. The Huskies are led by senior forward Linsey Trapino, who has two goals and an assist for five points already in two games. Sophomore midfielder Laney Haviland also has two goals for SCSU in two games.


Maggie Sherman enters her first season as head coach of the Huskies soccer program after being hired in February 2026. The seventh head coach in program history, Sherman most recently coached five seasons at D-I South Dakota (2021-25).


The Huskies were picked to finish fifth in the NSIC after finishing third last season. Both sides will meet again this season in NSIC play on October 2 in Duluth.

LAST TIME OUT: UMD had split results on the road in Michigan last weekend, defeating MTU in its season opener 2-0 Friday night in Houghton, Mich. before dropping a 2-1 decision to NMU in Marquette, Mich. on Sunday.

Two of the Bulldogs three goals on the weekend came off corner kicks and were scored by junior forward Lauren McGough, who netted on in each contest. Freshman Ameila Castlberg scored against the Huskies Friday night, like McGough, the first goal of her collegiate career. 

Sophomore Edy Halverson started her first to games as a Bulldog, and her first-ever start against MTU Friday also doubled as her first collegiate shutout. The last goalie to pick up a shut out in her Bulldog debut? Sophie Grenz, who held the Wildcats scoreless with three saves on Griggs Field on Sept. 6, 2019.

BULLDOG NOTES: UMD is earned for its fourth-ever opening season win against MTU and a back-to-back season win to open a year for the first time since UMD did it in 2016 and 2017 … the Bulldog also defeated MTU in 2025 to open the year in Houghton … it marked the first time UMD has ever had back-to-back wins in Houghton … UMD is now 4-6-1 all-time against the Huskies … the Bulldogs fell to 17-9-4 against NMU …  UMD is winless over the Wildcats since 2019 (a 1-0 win at home) and has gone 0-5-1 since then … in those last six games, the Wildcats have outscored the Bulldogs 20-6 and UMD has gone just 2-4-1 on the road against NMU since 2013 … UMD has had 10 corner kicks over two games, and has scored twice off the advantage … on the other side of the ball, the Bulldogs have yet to allow a goal off of 10 opponent corner kicks … UMD is averaging 10.5 fouls a game … and 20 shots a game with an average of 10 on goal while holding foes to just eight total over two matches … four players have yet to come out of game so far this season … defenders Kailey Tomzak, Gwendolyn Lilly and Keira Olabode and goaltender Halverson.
