University of Minnesota Duluth Athletic Training Residency
Mission:
The mission of the Athletic Training Residency program at the University of Minnesota Duluth is to create a patient-centered environment where the athletic training clinician can develop and advance their skills in orthopedics, specifically in prevention, evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal injuries while working collaboratively with other health care professionals.
General Position Description:
The University of Minnesota Duluth Ice Hockey Residency Program (non-accredited by CAATE) has two positions each academic year. The availability of the positions each year is dependent on the current Athletic Trainers working in the positions. These are one-year positions with the possibility of extending the position through a second academic year.
The Residency positions are 10-month positions beginning the first week of August and going through the last week of May. The Certified Athletic Trainers in this program will be provided the opportunity for increased knowledge in the clinical setting of a collegiate ice hockey Athletic Training Room while being mentored by the Director of Hockey Sports Performance/Director of Ice Hockey Residency Program. In addition to orthopedic evaluation and treatment, these positions will also include practice coverage, game/competition coverage, team travel, injury documentation, and referral when necessary.
Learning Outcomes:
- Prepare athletic trainers to develop and enhance their skills in a clinical environment while being an advocate for their patients.
- Increase competency in the area of emergent care and enacting an emergency action plan (especially in the ice hockey environment).
- Cooperate with physicians and other health care professionals and referring to the appropriate providers to collaborate when necessary.
- Apply evidence based practice to integrate the best available information to improve the quality of care and adapt when necessary.
- Develop skill in the use of technology to improve data collection, injury tracking, and the use of other online communication in practice.
- Exhibit professionalism while working to develop the patient’s health and mental well-being in a consistent, reliable, and ethical manner.
