Biography

AS A BULLDOG: Anxiously awaits expanded playing opportunities in 2012-13 after finding shifts somewhat scarce one year ago ... was installed in the UMD lineup on 11 occasions last winter, but accumulated a respectable five points (one goal and four assists) in that limited activity ... pumped in that lone goal in his third appearance as a Bulldog (against Alaska Anchorage on Nov. 12) and followed that up with his first assist six days later (versus Minnesota State-Mankato) ... helped set up a pair of scores in a 4-1 triumph at future National Collegiate Hockey Conference colleague Western Michigan on Jan. 6 ... only put five shots on goal all years (which figures out to be a .200 shooting percentage) and was a +6 ... wore No. 4 as rookie.

BEFORE UMD: Proved to be a valuable and physical defensive fit with the Penticton Vees over the course of his three seasons with the British Columbia Hockey League franchise ...  served as an assistant team captain with the 2010-11 Vees ... suited up for 144 career regular season games and had 30 points and a hefty 251 penalty minutes (including a team-high 129 in 2010-11) to show for it  ... two of his three lifetime goals with the Vees  came in special teams situations (one each on the power play and penalty kill).

PERSONAL: Born Derik James Johnson on Feb. 1, 1990  in Pittsburgh, Pa. ... is the son of Jim and Jody Johnson, both UMD graduates ... his father, who was inducted into the UMD Athletic Hall of Fame this past October, captained the Bulldogs to a Frozen Four berth as a senior defenseman (wearing No. 6) in 1984-85 and is the school’s all-time penalty and penalty minutes leader. He went on to  enjoy a 13-year NHL career with five different clubs and is currently an assistant coach with the NHL’s San Jose Sharks.   ... has one younger sister (Mia, a sophomore at UMD) ... is majoring in communication at UMD.
