Biography
2020-21 (Junior): Steffen played in all 13 games for the Bulldogs on the season, he averaged 14.0 minutes per game. Steffen averaged 2.8 points per game, while shooting 40% from the field and 38.9% from beyond the arc. He grabbed 16 rebounds, five assists and two steals over the course of the season. Steffen recorded double digit point totals January 16th vs. UMary and February 6th vs. Minnesota Crookston.Â
2019-20 (Sophomore):Â Playing in 26 games over the year, Steffen averaged 8.0 minutes a night. He made 38 points on the year, making 14 field goals on the year while averaging 0.7 rebounds and 0.7 assists per game on the year. He made four three throws on the year for a .667 percentage from the charity stripe. He was able to grab one block and upped his steals to five on the year.
2018-19 (Freshman): Played in 27 games this season averaging 8.6 minutes per game and making 37 points for the Bulldogs • Received an average of 0.7 rebounds, 0.6 assists and 3 steals • Achieved 37 points in his 27 games played for a scoring average of 1.4 • Made 14 of his attempted field goal shots to gain a percent of .368 • Placed top three for the Bulldogs following Jake Papers and Cody Tomlinson with a percent of .471 and 8 shots made.
BEFORE UMD: A 2018 graduate of Waunakee Community High School in Waunakee, Wis. • directed the Warriors to an 83-21 record during his four-year starting gig • played for head coach Dana McKenzie and went to back-to-back state tournaments • selected captain during his junior and senior campaigns • catapulted the Warriors to Badger North Conference titles in three straight seasons • finished his prep career with over 1,100 points (second-most in program history since 2003), 400 rebounds and 300 assists while he racked up an Associated Press All-State honorable mention distinction, a pair of first team all-conference accolades and an all-area honor.
PERSONAL: Born Mason James Steffen in Waunakee, Wis. • son of Richard and Amy Steffen • has two younger siblings, Peighton and Cade • is a second generation UMD basketball player with his father, Richard, suiting up from 1990-94 • activities at Waunakee include Future Business Leaders of America and a state winner for sports and entertainment management, qualifying for Nationals • majoring in business at UMD.
