BATTAGLIA BECOMES FIRST-EVER NSIC GLEN GALLIGAN AWARD WINNER FROM UMD; FIVE BULLDOGS EARN ALL-NSIC FIRST TEAM FOOTBALL RECOGNITION FOR 2003

University of Minnesota-Duluth senior wide receiver Tim Battaglia capped off a brilliant collegiate football career by being bestowed with the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference's Glen Galligan Award for 2003. The award, which was initiated in 1948, is given annually to a senior who best exemplifies excellence both in the classroom and on the field of play. Battaglia, who is the owner of virtually all UMD pass receiving records, maintains a 3.42 cumulative grade point average as a finance major. He is the first Bulldog to ever receive this honor.

Battaglia was one of 11 Bulldogs selected to the 2003 All-NSIC first or second teams. The five first-team honorees included junior center Adam Fechhelm, senior cornerback Chris Gaines, senior linebacker Dave Otto, senior offensive guard Dan Soldner, and junior defensive end Russ Rabe. A pair of 2002 All-NSIC first team picks -- Battaglia and Cash Langeness (who was recognized as both a quarterback and kick returner) -- were joined on the all-conference second unit by junior defensive tackle Thomas Cole, senior strong safety Shaun Fisher, junior punter Jason Schreiber and junior offensive tackle Talo Tavale.

Junior defensive end Geoff Fischer, senior placekicker Chad Gerlach, junior running back Dave Rufledt and senior linebacker Brian Wenngatz secured All-NSIC honorable mention recognition.

UMD concluded the 2003 season with an 8-3 overall record and placed third in the final NSIC standings at 6-2.
