The University of Minnesota Duluth men's basketball team dropped its first game since November 28th as the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay defeated the Bulldogs 78-67 Saturday night at the Resch Center in Green Bay, Wis.
The Bulldogs found themselves down early as UWGB came out of the gates to score the first eight points in the game. But after a 30-second timeout by UMD head coach
Gary Holquist, UMD would score 14 of the next 20 points to knot the game at 14-14 with just over 11 minutes to play in the half. The Phoenix would however, pour it on in the last ten minutes of the half to jump out to a nine-point halftime lead 37-28.
UMD came out in the second half getting a quick bucket from freshman Bryan Foss and a three-pointer by senior Dusty Decker to come within four points (37-33), but that was a close as UMD would be as UWGB would go on 14-5 run and never look back.
The Phoenix controlled the boards holding a 41-29 edge on the glass.
Both teams struggled from the free throw line as the Bulldogs were just 6-of-15 from the line for 40 percent and the Phoenix shot a cool 54.8 percent of 17-of-31.
Decker led the way for the Bulldogs recording 18 points and five rebounds. Freshman Nate Perry joined Decker as a team-leading rebounder with five.
The Phoenix had three players record double-digit point totals with Terry Parker leading the way netting 16 points. Mike King came off the bench for UWGB to grab a game-high 10 rebounds.
The loss ends the Bulldogs’ five-game winning streak and marks the team’s first loss in close to a month.
The Bulldogs are now 0-4 all-time versus UWGB.
