University of Minnesota-Duluth head men's basketball coach
Gary Holquist has announced the signing of five student-athletes to national letters of intent for the 2003-04 season.
Luke Korneta of La Crosse, WI, Matt Rawley of Milwaukee, Brian St. Peter of Menominee, MI, and Scott Vogel of Spooner, WI, all signed today. Ryan Breidenbach of Oregon, WI, committed during the early signing period in November.
Korneta, a 6-foot-6, 210-pound forward, averaged 18 points and 10 rebounds for Logan High School in 2002-03. He earned All-Mississippi Valley Conference and All-La Crosse Area first team honors and was selected to play in the WIAA Coaches All-Star game. A Wisconsin Associated Press All-State honorable mention pick, he is the younger brother of current Bulldog forward Joe Korneta, who was a red-shirt freshman last season.
Rawley, a 6-8, 215-pound forward/center, led Milwaukee's North Shore Conference in scoring and rebounding as a senior at Lutheran High School, gaining all-league honors. Rawley averaged 18 points, 11.5 rebounds and 2.5 blocks per game.
St. Peter, a 6-0, 165-pound guard, is a two-time All-Upper Peninsula pick out of Menominee High School. He averaged 18 points, 6.5 rebounds, 4.5 steals and three assists per outing in 2002-03. St. Peter was named to the All-Great North Conference team for the second-straight year and gained honorable mention to the Michigan All-State team.
Vogel, a 6-7, 195-pound forward/center, helped Spooner High School to a 19-4 record in 2003, earning honorable mention to the Wisconsin All-State team. Vogel claimed All-Heart Of The North Conference honors, leading the league at 24 points and nine rebounds per game. He was tabbed as the Eau Claire Leader-Telegram Player of the Year.
Breidenbach, a 6-1, 185-pound point guard, is Oregon High School's all time leader in steals (222) and is third in career scoring. A two-time All-Badger Conference first team pick, Breidenbach averaged 20 points, five rebounds, four assists and four steals in 2003. He led Oregon High School to a 16-6 mark last season, earning honorable mention to the Wisconsin All-State team.
\"These five players give us excellent potential and depth at each position on the floor,\" Holquist said. \"Each one of them has the scoring, rebounding and play-making ability that will allow us to maintain our level of competition as we move towards play in the North Central Conference in 2004-05.\"
UMD advanced to its second straight NCAA Division II Tournament in 2002-03, finishing with an overall record of 19-12. The Bulldogs tied for third in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference at 12-6 and won the NSIC Tournament title for the second year in a row.
All signings are contingent upon admission to the University, and compliance with NCAA rules, including certification by the NCAA Clearinghouse.
