UMD HOLDS OFF LATE ST. CLOUD STATE SURGE TO EARN SERIES SWEEP

St. Cloud State University scored three times in the final ten minutes of play, but it was not enough to catch the University of Minnesota-Duluth as the visiting Bulldogs emerged with a 6-4 Western Collegiate Hockey Association win Saturday afternoon.

The Bulldogs' first goal came on its first shot of the game at 1:18 from Allison Lehrke. Juliane Jubinville fed Lehrke behind the net and she walked out and scored on her backhand. UMD found the net again 13:20 when Julianne Vasichek teed up from the blue line and fired a shot that skimmed the post before heading in.

Twenty-nine seconds into the second period, Jessica Koizumi redirected a pass from Caroline Ouellette that slowly trickled past Husky goalie Laurie St. Jacques. At 7:58 Jenny Potter buried a lose puck to put UMD up by four. The Bulldogs added another goal in the second periodon the power play. Krista Simonson was serving a minor for body checking when UMD goalie slid the puck to Nora Tallus. Tallus then launched a long pass to Koizumi who finally ripped a wrist shot top corner. Schaublin’s assist marks her first point as a Bulldog. Four goals proved too many for St. Jacques as she was pulled and replaced by last night’s starter Ellen Brinkman. The change in net sparked the Huskies and at 11:35 St. Cloud captain Kobi Kawamoto got the Huskies on the board when she slid a low shot past Schaublin.

St. Cloud State netted their second at 13:38 on a wrap around from Calise Johnson. With six minutes remaining, Shannon Kasparek relieved Schaublin and within seconds she was challenged. Kobi Kawamoto picked up a UMD turnover and walked in alone and roofed a backhand past Kasparek. A minute later the Bulldogs responded when Potter redirected a pass from Ouellette to regain a three-goal lead. The Huskies refused to give up though and notched their fourth and final at 19:28 by Katie Hauge. St. Cloud pulled Brinkman for the extra attacker, but UMD held on for the win.

UMD are now 17-9-2 overall and 12-6-1 in the WCHA. The Bulldogs hit the road for the third consecutive weekend when they travel south to face the league leading Minnesota Gophers, February 28-29.
