Buoyed by top 15 finishes by three individuals, the University of Minnesota-Duluth men made their 2004 debut Saturday by placing second out of a field of 10 teams at its own Campus Quest Invitational.
The Bulldogs posted a team score of 67 points while St. Thomas University took top honors with 29 points. UMD was paced individually in the 8k event by the trio of sophomore Brian Polski (9th place with a time of 27:56.5) and freshmen Eric Atkinson (13th; 28:01.8) and Tony Thompson (15th; 28:28.0). Another first-year Bulldog, Pete Klopp of Duluth, was next at 28:541.6 -- good for 18th place out of 154 competitors.
On the women's side, Northern Michigan University (17) captured the team title, followed by St. Thomas (68), UMD (70) and the College of St. Scholastica. Northern Michigan placed 10 runners among the first 13 finishers, the only exceptions were Bulldog sophomore Sara Frederickson (4th; 19.23.9), senior Erin Foss (9th; 19:51.8) and junior Kelsey Dahlgren (12th; 20:03.6). Twelve teams and some 141 athletes took part in the 5K women's race.
Both the UMD men and women will head to Northfield, MN, next Saturday (Sept. 18) for the St. Olaf Invitational.
