UMD WOMEN SHUT DOWN GOLDEN BEARS\' LATE CHARGE IN 72-58 WIN

Lindsey Dietz showed the damage she can cause opposing teams when she's allowed to stay in the game as she and the Bulldogs shut down Concordia-St. Paul Saturday afternoon before a crowd of 647 at the Gangelhoff Center. The All-American senior, who was forced to sit out the first half Friday because of foul trouble, led UMD with a game-high 25 points as the Bulldogs battered the Golden Bears 72-58 in their own Radisson St. Paul Classic. Dietz, who played all but one minute of the contest, was named the Classic's Most Valuable Player for her efforts, which also included nine rebounds, five assists and five steals on the day.

UMD, who led 34-21 at halftime, outscored Concordia in the paint 34-18 and was ahead by as many as 25 points in the second half. The Golden Bears were able to cut the deficit to nine points following a 27-11 run. The run lasted more than 11 minutes with just over two minutes remaining in the game, but the Bulldogs were able to capitalize from the charity stripe down the stretch and drained 17 free throws in the second half to seal the victory.

UMD bullied the Bears with an aggressive defense that sent Concordia to the line 38 times but also held them to 30.4% on 14-46 shooting from the field and 27.3% on 3-11 from three point territory. Senior co-preseason NSIC Player of the Year Nakia Carlisle led the Golden Bears with 20 points, while Amanda Behnke added 15 points and 15 rebounds for Concordia, St. Paul (1-1).

Alissa Pauly contributed 13 points for the Bulldogs, while Laura Sylvester and Justine Axtell both turned in 10 point performances. Axtell joined Dietz on the all-tournament team after she was deadly from long range yesterday, leading UMD with a game-high 25 points against the Bemidji State.

The Bulldogs, (2-1), head home to Romano Gymnasium Friday, November 25 as they take on Point Loma Nazarene in the 23rd American Family Insurance Classic. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
