The University of Minnesota Duluth women’s hockey team completed a two-game series sweep over host St. Cloud State University on Saturday afternoon with a 6-0 win at the National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn. With the victory, UMD improves to 8-0-0 overall and 8-0-0 in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association.
The Bulldogs took an early lead at 1:58 in the first period when sophomore forward
Sara O’Toole slipped the puck past St. Cloud State’s (3-6-1, 2-6-0 WCHA) goaltender for the power play goal. Freshman forwards
Emmanuelle Blais and Saara Tuominen assisted on the play.
Tuominen would put UMD up 2-0 at 10:09 in the first to earn her third goal of the season. O’Toole and sophomore defenseman
Myriam Trepanier earned the assist.
The second period of play was scoreless, with each side putting nine shots on goal a piece.
The final period of play would be completely dominated by UMD as the Bulldogs rocketed four pucks past the Huskies net minder.
O’Toole scored at 6:05 in the third to put the Bulldogs up 3-0 and in complete control of the game. Tuominen again found herself in the mix, earning her second assist of the night. Freshman defenseman
Jaime Rassmussen assisted on the goal as well.
Blais would light up the scoreboard for UMD at 10:32 in the third period for her fourth goal of the season. O’Toole earned her second assist of the game on the play and sophomore forward
Tawni Mattila found herself in the mix with an assist on the play.
O’Toole found the back of the net for a hat trick at 12:51 of the final period. Mattila and Tuominen each earned an assist on the goal that put the Bulldogs up 5-0.
As if three goals weren’t enough, O’Toole rocketed the puck past St. Cloud State’s goaltender for her fourth and final goal of the night at 14:27 in the third period. Trepanier secured her second assist of the game on the goal and senior defenseman
Jill Sales also earned an assist on the goal.
Freshman goalie
Kim Martin tallied 31 saves in the contest, improving her record to 4-0-0 on the season.
Lauri St. Jacques made 25 saves and was saddled with the loss for the Huskies.
The Bulldogs will be back in action on Nov. 3-4 when they travel to Minneapolis, Minn., to face the University of Minnesota. The puck is set to drop at 7:07 p.m. for both games.
