Mason Raymond has made quite the splash during debut collegiate season and today the Western Collegiate Hockey Association recognized the University of Minnesota Duluth left wing's accomplishments by today (March 16) naming him to its All-Rookie Team for 2005-06.
A native of Cochrane, Alberta, Raymond has spent the entire year at, or near, the top of the Bulldog scoring chart and currently ranks as the club's No. 2 point producer with 11 goals (including six power play tallies) and 17 assists for 28 points. He also has put more shots on goal -- 148 in 39 games -- than any other Bulldog to date. Raymond, who finished third among WCHA rookies in league points (23) and second in assists (15), was named the league's Rookie of the Week after turning in a five-point weekend in a two-game set at Colorado College on Dec. 9-10. The second round pick of the Vancouver Canucks in last July's National Hockey League draft, Raymond served as the Bulldogs' alternate team captain during the month of January.
Raymond becomes the seventh Bulldog to be chosen to the WCHA's All-Rookie Team, which was established in 1990-91. Current senior goaltender
Isaac Reichmuth, in 2002-03, was the last UMD player to earn that honor.
Raymond and the reenergized Bulldogs will take on St. Cloud State University in the opening round of the Red Baron WCHA Final Five tonight at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.
