UMD CAPS OFF 2006 WITH 4-3 WIN OVER BOWLING GREEN

Getting goals from four different players and some stellar play from its penalty killing squadron, the University of Minnesota Duluth bid good riddance to 2006 by upending Bowling Green State University 4-3 Saturday in the third place game of the Ohio Hockey Classic in Columbus, Ohio.

Senior center Jeff McFarland, sophomore right wing Nick Kemp, sophomore defenseman Matt Niskanen and junior center Matt McKnight each scored once and junior left wing Mason Raymond had a pair of assists as UMD snapped a five-game losing skid. The Bulldogs also killed off eight of Bowling Green's nine power play opportunities, including a five-minute major and two other attempts in the third period.

McFarland's and Kemp's goals came 48 seconds apart late in the first period after the Falcons (4-15-1 overall) had taken a 1-0 lead just over two minutes into the game on their first shot on net. McFarland has now scored three times (a career-high) since ending a 97-game goal-less drought back on Nov. 25. Sophomore left wing Matt Greer, who accounted for UMD's only tally in a 4-1 loss to host Ohio State Friday, picked up one of the assists while freshman defenseman Chase Ryan was credited with the other for his first collegiate point. Kemp, who sat out Friday's setback to the Buckeyes while serving a game disqualification penalty, one-timed a feed from sophomore center McGregor Sharp while potting his first goal of the year.

At the 5:56 mark of the second period and UMD on the power play, Niskanen scored on a shot from the point for his sixth goal of the season to put UMD up 3-1. After Bowling Green answered with 48 seconds remaining in the second with a power play of their own, McKnight scored what proved to be the eventual game-winner on a wrap around 4:45 into the third period. It was the first goal for the team co-captain, who has missed nine games in 2006-07 due to injury, since the second weekend of the season. Raymond was credited with the lone assist on that goal, his second of the night, to take over as UMD's 2006-07 scoring leader with 20 points in 21 games.

Freshman Alex Stalock stopped 21 of 24 Falcon shots while earning his fourth win of the year -- but first since Dec. 2, while Falcon netminder Jimmy Spratt finished with 24 saves.

The Bulldogs, who were 1-of-3 on the power play, moved to 5-13-3 on the year and will return to the Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center next Friday and Saturday to host Western Collegiate Hockey Association rival Michigan Tech.

Notes: Matt Niskanen was the Bulldogs' sole representative on the six-member Ohio Hockey Classic All-Tournament Team ... All but three (all assists) of Niskanen's career-best 19 points this season have come on the power play ... UMD has never been beaten in back-to-back games in any of the 29 regular season tournaments it has taken part in during the 63-year history the Bulldog hockey program ... 10 different Bulldogs marked in the points column Saturday ... UMD is now unbeaten in seven of its last eight outings with Central Collegiate Hockey Association schools (6-1-1).
