Senior goaltender
Riitta Schaublin, a prominent figure on the women’s hockey team at the University of Minnesota Duluth, has been named the Western Collegiate Hockey Association’s Defensive Player of the Week.
Schaublin, a native of Basel, Switzerland, made 26 saves in a 5-0 shutout of Bemidji State University last Saturday (Jan. 20) in the opening game of the conference series. She then backstopped the Bulldogs to a 3-1 victory over the host Beavers in Sunday’s (Jan. 21) contest, stopping 22 of 23 shots.
Schaublin, a Patty Kazmaier Award finalist last season, moved her record to 9-3-2 this season while helping move her UMD squad into sole possession of second place in the WCHA. She currently sports a .925 save percentage that places her 11th in the nation right now. In WCHA play alone, Schaublin is ranked third in the league with a .932 save percentage.
The Bulldogs are currently on a seven game unbeaten streak and will look to extend that mark this coming weekend (Jan. 26-27) when the team travels to Ohio State University.
