MARTIN\'S 80 SAVE WEEKEND EARNS HER WCHA DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONORS

Considering sophomore goaltender Kim Martin nabbed almost everything that the University of Minnesota could put on her net last weekend, it seems only fitting she would grab the Western Collegiate Hockey Association's Defensive Player of the Week for a second time this season.

The native of Stockholm, Sweden, shattered the University of Minnesota Duluth women's hockey team record for saves in a game when she kept the Bulldogs net empty by turning away 50 shots on goal, including a penalty shot, against the Gophers last Saturday (Nov. 17) to earn the sixth shutout of her college career.

Martin, who just recently returned from net-minding duties for Team Sweden at the Four Nations Cup a week ago, eclipsed the UMD record of 44 saves after just two periods when she had tallied 45 stops in forty minutes of action. What made Martin's feat even more impressive was the fact that UMD played 12 minutes in the second stanza a man down, including a 5-on-3 that Martin and the Bulldog penalty kill units simply twarted. The clean sheet was Martin's third on the year.

Martin, already a two-time Defensive Player of the Week this season, becomes the fifth WCHA Player of the Week to play in a Bulldog jersey so far this season.

UMD, currently ranked No. 4 in the nation, will skate of Thanksgiving dinner this weekend at the DECC when it hosts Minnesota State University, Mankato. Game time for both Friday and Saturday's WCHA contests is 7:07 p.m.
