The Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center will play the gracious host this weekend when the top four teams remaining in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association playoffs comes to town for the WCHA Final Face-Off.
The remaining teams --- the No. 3 University of Minnesota Duluth, the No.4 University of Minnesota, the No. 5 University of Wisconsin and St. Cloud State University --- have all earned semifinal berths and will play Saturday at the DECC.
UMD, the first seed, will hit the ice against St. Cloud State at 1:07 p.m. Saturday. The Bulldogs (29-4-1) won the WCHA regular season title and have won 21 of its last 22 games. UMD triumphed in all four of its regular season meetings against the Huskies this season.
The second contest of the matinee will pit Minnesota against Wisconsin at 4:07 p.m. Both teams met just two weeks ago in Minneapolis, with the Badgers winning one game and the two squads splitting the second outing. Wisconsin was 2-1-1 against Minnesota this season.
Saturday's winners will play for the championship Sunday in the title game at the DECC at 1:07 p.m. All games will be streamed live via the league's offical web site at WCHA.CSTV.com and WCHA.TV. with the championship game to be carried on tape delay by FSN North and FSN Wisconsin March 22 at 5 p.m.
UMD is currently ranked No. 2 in the latest PairWise rankings, the polling system that determines the seating for the top eight teams in the country. If the Bulldogs stay among the top four teams among the NCAA selection committee, they will host an NCAA quarterfinal game at the DECC on Saturday, March 15 at 7:07 p.m. The announcement for the NCAA quaterfinal participants will be on Sunday evening, March 9 at 6 p.m. The game is crucial as the winner advances to the 2008 Frozen Four, which will be held in Duluth the following weekend.
Tickets will be available at the UMD ticket office (218-726-8595) for the NCAA quarterfinal game starting next Monday (March 10) after the top eight teams in the country are announced and seated for the all important playoff play the following weekend.
