The venerable Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center will host one more Western Collegiate Hockey Association playoff series before it closes its doors for good next December.
The University of Minnesota Duluth saw to it Saturday night as sophomore goaltender Brady Hjelle turned aside all 22 shots he faced and junior right winger Justin Fontaine scored a pair of goals in a 3-0 victory over the University of Minnesota. A sellout DECC crowd of 5,411 saw Hjelle post his first shut out in 20 career games and the No. 10 Bulldogs blank their intrastate rivals for the first time since Nov. 14, 1980.
Fontaine opened the scoring by ripping in a rebound between the two face off circles 8:17 into the second period before sophomore Brady Lamb made it 2-0 just 86 seconds later when he blasted a shot from the high slot on the power play. The goal was the Lamb's ninth of the year which ranks second among all WCHA defensemen. Fontaine put the finishing touches on UMD's fourth win in its last five games with Minnesota with an empty net goal -- giving him a WCHA-leading 21 on the year and an even 100 points for his career -- with 2:41 remaining in regulation.
Both sophomore center Mike Connolly and junior defenseman Mike Montgomery were credited with two assists and were a plus-two on the night.
Hjelle, who had 21 saves in Friday's 3-2 setback to the Gophers, improved his lifetime home record to 9-3-0 while helping keep Minnesota off the board on the power play (0-for-4) for the second straight night.
UMD (19-14-1 overall; 15-10-1 WCHA) will close out the 2009-10 regular season with a two-game WCHA series next Friday and Saturday at the University of Alaska Anchorage.
