Box Score
Two goals in a three-minute span late in the second period shifted the momentum and proved to be the difference in the University of Notre Dame's 3-2 non-conference victory over the University of Minnesota Duluth Friday night at AMSOIL Arena.
A minute and 54 seconds after Bulldog sophomore center
Cal Decowski drew the Bulldogs even at 1-1 with his first goal of the season, Notre Dame answered, getting a power play score from Mario Lucia at 14:38 of the second period. Then, with 2:01 to go before intermission, the No. 2 Irish hiked their lead to 3-1 when Peter Schneider batted in a rebound from in tight.
The Bulldogs, who had been outshot 23-13 through 40 minutes of play, came out with a jump in their step in the third and cut the deficit to 3-2 at the 12:58 mark on sophomore defenseman
Andy Welinski's blast from the high slot while the Bulldogs were two men up. The 5-on-3 power play opportunity was a result of a rare five-minute facemasking penalty called on Irish goaltender Steven Summerhays and a hooking infraction on teammate T.J. Tynan, Â which came 13 seconds later. Summerhays, who posted 14 saves to that point, was also given a 10-minute game misconduct and his replacement, Chad Katunar, wound up stopping five of six shots in his collegiate debut.
Senior netminder
Aaron Crandall, making his second straight start, finished with 20 saves for the UMD, which went 1-for-5 on the power play. Notre Dame cashed in on one of its six chances with the extra man.
The loss snapped the Bulldogs' six-game home unbeaten streak, a 5-0-1 run which stretched back to last February, and dropped them to 2-2-1 overall on the year. Notre Dame, which came into the evening having outscored its opposition 17-5, improved to 5-0-0.
The two teams will go at it again on Saturday night at AMSOIL Arena.Â
