The University of Minnesota Duluth came into its National Collegiate Hockey Conference series opener with the University of North Dakota Friday night leading the nation in penalty killing efficiency.
Not any more.
No. 13 North Dakota scored twice on the power play, including the eventual-game winner with 10:05 to go in the game and went on to down No. 20 UMD 4-2 in Grand Forks, N.D. The Bulldogs, who entered the night having given up just three goals to the opposition in 47 opportunities with the man advantage (6.4 percent) trailed 2-0 midway through the third period before freshman left winger
Alex Iafallo and junior right winger
Adam Krause scored 20 seconds. Iafallo's goal -- his team leading fourth of the season -- came after a shot from freshman center
Dominic Toninato hit the former Fargo Force standout in the chest while he was sprawled out and sliding into the North Dakota net. Krause picked up his first collegiate power play goal at 6:57 of the third period when he shoveled in a rebound but North Dakota got the equalizer three minutes later on the power play from Jordan Schmaltz , whose blast from the high slot snuck through traffic and past a screened
Aaron Crandall. North Dakota iced the victory with an empty net goal with just under a minute left.
North Dakota's Rocco Grimaldi struck at 17:29 of the first period and the hosts maintained that 1-0 lead until 37 seconds into the third period when Michael Park's wrap around attempt was, after two separate reviews, ruled a goal.
The Bulldogs, who outshot North Dakota 35-17 on the night, dropped to 4-4-1 overall and 1-2-0 in the NCHC. North Dakota is now 4-4-1 on the year as well and 3-4-0 in NCHA play.
The two long-time rivals will meet again on Saturday at 7:07 p.m.
