UMD (6-3, 3-2 NSIC) climbs back above .500 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play, while Minot (7-2, 3-2 NSIC) has now suffered two straight setbacks after starting the season on a seven-game winning streak.
The Bulldogs built up a 13-point lead in the first at 37-24 with 6:48 seconds remaining, but the Beavers held UMD without a field goal the rest of the half and narrowed the margin to 38-34 before heading to the locker room. Turnovers seemed to haunt UMD throughout the night as the Bulldogs amassed 23 on the night, but an impressive 52.2 percent shooting night, including 8-for-16 from beyond the arch kept Minot from taking control as the Beavers stumbled with a 41.8 percent shooting including 7-of-22 from three-point range.
UMD trailed late in the second, but made good on free-throws and were able to turn the ball over enough to allow Newman a chance to take the lead for the Bulldogs twice in the final minute, first with a three-pointer just past the 19:00 minute mark and then the dagger jumpshot with tenths-of-a-second remaining. Newman totalled 13 points on the night, while also adding six assists. Sophomore forward
Taylor Meyer led UMD with 14 points on the night, while freshman center
Allyson Harris earned a double-double in her first career start with 12 rebounds, 11 on the defensive end, coupled with an even 10 points.
