Monday will be a busy day for Bulldog fans trying to keep track of University of Minnesota Duluth women's hockey players in the IIHF World Championship, as six current and former Bulldogs will be playing in the semifinals for three different teams.
Caroline Ouellette, Haley Irwin and Jocelyne Larocque of Canada will face Alexsandra Vafina and Iya Gavrilova of Russia, while Tea Villila and Finland will take on Team USA.
In the first quarterfinal game, Jennifer Harss kept Germany as close to Finland as she could Saturday, but in the end, Finland had the one goal they needed to advance in the tournament.
Harss saved 42 of the 43 shots she faced, with Finland outshelling Germany 43-13. Playing two games and 120:53 minutes, Harss faced 76 shots on net and turned away 72 saves for a 1.99 goals against average.
Current Bulldog sophomore defenseman Villila and Team Finland will face Team USA on Monday at 3:30 pm ET in the first semifinal game at SBJ Arena in Ottawa, Canada. Harss and Germany will play Switzerland in the fifth place game at 11:30 am on Monday.
In the second semifinal game, Bulldog senior Vafina and alum Iya Gavrilova helped Russia overcome Switzerland 2-1 to advance into the semifinals where they will face Canada at 7:30 pm ET time Monday night.
Sweden used a shootout to beat the Czech Republic 2-1 in the relagation game earlier in the day. Both teams play again Monday.
