VOLLEYBALL REMAINS UNDEFEATED AFTER FIRST DAY IN KENOSHA

Bulldogs down No. 19 Indianapolis and Wayne State (Mich.) by identical 3-1 scores

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The No. 2 University of Minnesota Duluth volleyball team remained undefeated on Friday evening with a pair of 3-1 wins at the Wis.-Parkside tournament in Kenosha, Wis., defeating No. 19 University of  Indianapolis and Wayne State (Mich.) University.

Defending AVCA Player of the Week Kate Lange (Sr./OH) became the story of the first match as the Bulldogs moved to 6-0 after today's action. She smashed a career-high and UMD school record 33 kills while also knocking four solo blocks.

"It's amazing that Kate has somehow played better today than last week when she earned national player of the week," Coach Jim Boos said after the match. Lange averaged over seven kills per set during today's action.

After falling in the first set 25-23, the Bulldogs took control over the tightly-contested final three, downing the Greyhounds 26-24, 25-15, and 25-23. Sophomore setter Ashley Hinsch tallied 57 helpers in the first match, while junior libero Julie Rainey grabbed 21 defensive digs. Junior outside hitter Katie Ledwell earned 11 digs of her own in the match while also adding eight kills.

"They play at a very different tempo than we are used to, one we weren't able to respond well to right away," Boos said. "But we battled back and were able to pull out a tough, tough victory."

The second match of the evening was another four-set affair, with UMD jumping out to a two-set advantage after a dominating 25-7 second set (25-22 first). The Warriors won a tight 25-23 third set before the Bulldogs took the match with a strong 25-14 final frame.

Lange added a double-double to her impressive night with 27 kills and 16 digs. Four Bulldogs had at least six kills in the match, with Monica Turner (So./MB) cracking double digits with 11. Turner also added five blocks, including one solo. Rainey and Ledwell also tallied double-digit digs, adding 15 and 11, respectively. Hinsch barely missed double figures with nine digs while leading the team with 49 assists for the Bulldogs.

"Tomorrow should present a new set of challengers as well," Boos said. "It's exactly what I was hoping to get out of this season's tournament play."

UMD returns to the court tomorrow, taking on the host Rangers of Wis.-Parkside tomorrow at noon, before closing out tournament play against Lewis University at 5:00 p.m.
