UMD MAKES A POINT IN 64-21 ROAD ROUT OF WAYNE STATE

Logan Lauters runs for one of his three touchdowns Saturday afternoon in Wayne, Neb.
Box Score After mustering just 17 points -- and one touchdown in basically the  final three quarters of play -- in a rare home setback last week, the University of Minnesota Duluth decided to let off a little offensive steam Saturday in Wayne, Neb. Make that a lot of steam.

The No. 13 Bulldogs piled up a season-high 483 total yards, built a 43-21 halftime lead and closed out the afternoon with 28 unanswered points en route to trouncing Wayne State 64-21 at Bob Cunningham Field. Sophomore running back Logan Lauters helped spark the offensive onslaught, rushing for 103 yards and three touchdowns (all in the first half) on just 11 carries while four other Bulldogs – freshman quarterback Drew Bauer, junior running back Austin Sikorski, sophomore quarterback Eric Kline and senior running back Jeron Johnson -- each ran for one score.

Bauer, who was nine-of-21 for 129 yards in a little over two quarters of work, also hit junior wide out Zach Zweifel with a 38-yard scoring pass late in the opening half. Wayne State (1-3 overall) committed three turnovers on the day, including a first-quarter interception which UMD senior inside linebacker Colby Ring parlayed into a 28-yard touchdown return. That put the Bulldogs (3-1) up 15-0, but the Wildcats would then strike for a pair of touchdowns in a span of four minutes to cut the lead to one, only to see UMD go on a 28-7 run before the half to put the game away.

UMD, which sports the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference's top defense against the run, held Wayne State to just 52 yards on the ground and 258 yards overall (including a mere 35 yards the entire second half).  Freshman cornerback Darion Fletcher, sophomore linebacker Brent Stiglich and senior defensive end Chris Vandervest were all credited with a team-high five tackles.

The Bulldogs will return to James S. Malosky Stadium next Saturday (Oct. 5) for a Homecoming Game clash with St. Cloud State University.

Notes: UMD is now 11-1 lifetime against Wayne State College with the lone loss coming on its previous visit to Wayne (7-0 in 2011) …  With today's victory, the Bulldogs were able to avoid something they haven't done in six years – lose two consecutive games. UMD was upended 21-17 by No. 2 Minnesota State University-Mankato  last Saturday night …  Jeron Johnson, fellow senior running back Chaz Thomas, and junior tight end Taylor Grant, a transfer from the University of North Dakota, all made their first pass catches as Bulldogs Saturday … Colby Ring's pick-six was UMD's third of the 2013 season … Logan Lauters became the first Bulldog to run for 100 yards this fall and has now eclipsed the 100-yard rush mark three times as a collegian … UMD has come away with points (three touchdowns and a field goal) on its opening series in all four outings thus far.
