Box Score 2 Senior outside hitter
Kate Lange reached the 1,500 career kill plateau as the No. 4 University of Minnesota Duluth made it a perfect 4-0 at the West Florida Opening Weekend Tournament in Pensacola by defeating Missouri S&T in straight sets Saturday evening.
With 11 kills in the match, Lange now has 83 on the season and 1,506 for her career, good for sixth all-time at UMD. She was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player. Also joining her on the All-Tournament team were junior libero
Julie Rainey and sophomore setter
Ashley Hinsch.
The Miners scored the first point of the match, but the Bulldogs quickly made it 2-1 and never relinquished the lead in the first set.
The match's second set was more competitive with Missouri leading much of the first half. UMD pulled even and the score tied six times before the Bulldogs pulled away with five unanswered points to win 25-20.
The final game proved to be the Bulldogs' most dominant of the weekend as they pulled away to an 8-0 lead to start the set before winning by a 25-12 final.
Junior outside hitter
Katie Ledwell also cracked double digits in kills for UMD with 10 of her own while also adding eight digs. Rainey tallied 14 digs in the match, while Hinsch racked up 29 set assists.
In the Bulldogs' first match of the day, they found themselves tested by a Southern Indiana team before topping the Screaming Eagles in four sets.
UMD won the first set going away, a dominant 25-14 victory which saw the team lead by as many as 12 points.
The second and third sets had matching 25-21 scores -- the second falling the way of the Screaming Eagles before the Bulldogs took the highly competitive third set which saw three tied scores.
Southern Indiana pulled ahead to a 16-12 lead in the fourth set before UMD stormed onto an 11-0 run to take the final game 25-18, and the match 3-1.
Lange led the way with a double-double with 23 kills on 59 attacks as well as 17 digs. Ledwell and
Maddy Siroin (RS) also broke double digits in kills, with 12 and 14 respectively.
Hinsch added a double-double of her own with 56 set assists and 10 digs in game one. Rainey had 19 digs to lead the way for UMD.
The Bulldogs will again hit the road next weekend but stay a bit closer to home as they travel to the Wisconsin Parkside tournament in Kenosha, Wis. The action begins with a match vs. preseason No. 9 Indianapolis at 4:00 p.m. on Friday afternoon.
