Box Score A day after her elder sister led the University of Minnesota Duluth to victory, junior guard
Jessica Newman took the reins and lifted the Bulldogs to a 64-60 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference victory over Southwest Minnesota State University at Romano Gym Saturday.
UMD (9-5, 6-4 NSIC) dominated time of possesion in the game and made good on second chances, hauling in 18 offensive rebounds and 37 total on the night. SMSU (2-12, 0-10 NSIC) remains winless in league play despite shooting 41.1 percent of the game.
The younger Newman led all scorers with 17 points on the night. Fellow junior guard
Danielle Flood finished with 13 points including a perfect 6-of-6 from the charity stripe while the Bulldogs held on against a surging Southwest squad. The Mustangs had four players hit double figures scoring and a fifth with nine points, shrinking an 11-point halftime deficit down to a pair.
Late free-throws gave the Bulldogs the edge as UMD shot just 33.3 percent for the game but made 14 of 18 from the line. Senior center
Hannah Rutten fell just one rebound short of a double-double with 10 points and a game-high nine boards.
UMD hits the road next weekend beginning with a return match against NSIC North rival Minot State. The Bulldogs beat the Beavers 70-68 at Romano Gym earlier this season. Opening tip is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
