Box Score The University of Minnesota Duluth suffered a setback in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference's North Division as Minnesota State University-Moorhead knocked off the Bulldogs 75-70 at Romano Gym on Friday evening.
The Bulldogs (9-8, 6-7 NSIC) struggled to find an answer for Dragon senior forward Morgan Zabel, who tossed in a game-high 28 points on 11-of-19 shooting to lift MSU-Moorhead (10-7, 6-7 NSIC) past the Bulldogs.
The opening minute belonged to UMD junior guard
Jessica Newman, who had eight of the Bulldogs' first 10 points as the team opened a 10-0 lead in the early going. The Bulldogs maintained that edge, leading by as much as 12 in the opening frame and still by 10 at 30-20 with six minutes before halftime, but Moorhead whittled away in the closing moments and cut the lead to just four at halftime.
UMD stretched its lead back out to nine when junior guard
Danielle Flood sank a three-pointer with six minutes in the books for the second half, but the Bulldogs went cold without a basket from the field for nearly 11 minutes, a period in which the Dragons made seven of eight free throws and Meghan Roehrich sank a three-pointer to take the lead for the first time in the game. Zabel gave MSU-Moorhead a three-point lead with just over a minute to go, and the Bulldogs couldn't get the open look they wanted in the closing seconds. A pair of Dragon free-throws stretched the lead to five with just seconds to go, leaving the Bulldogs in the cold.
Flood finished 6-of-13 on the night including 3-of-5 from three-point range to lead UMD with 19 points. Senior center
Hannah Rutten missed a double-double with 15 points and nine rebounds, a team high.
Jessica Newman finished the game with 13 points and a game-high five assists, while older sister
Katrina Newman (Sr./forward) added 10 points and eight boards. MSU-Moorhead shot an efficient 52.8 percent from the field, holding the Bulldog offense to 44.3 percent. A 7-of-21 mark from three-point range cursed UMD on this night.
The Bulldogs are back on the court at Romano Gym tomorrow afternoon taking on No. 22-ranked Northern State University (14-2, 10-2 NSIC) in another tough NSIC North Division showdown. Opening tip is set for 4:00 p.m.
