Box Score The first game of the New Year wasn't kind to the Bulldogs.
The University of Minnesota Duluth began 2014 with their second road loss of the season, a 95-63 loss to No. 20 Concordia University, St. Paul in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference battle at the Gangelhoff Center in St. Paul, Minn. The 32-point setback was the largest deficit since a 30-point loss to Northern State on Dec. 15, 2012.
Senior forward
Hannah Rutten returned to action for the first time after injuring her knee. Rutten had a team-high 14 points, pulled down five rebounds and recorded a block and a steal in 23 minutes of action off the bench.
Senior forward
Katrina Newman was the only other Bulldog to score in double figures. Newman, the native of Barnum, Minn., also collected seven boards and swiped three steals. Sophomore
Taylor Meyer pulled down a season-high nine boards in her fourth consecutive start of the year.
Concordia-St. Paul (10-4, 5-2 NSIC) opened the scoring jumping out to a 4-0 lead. UMD (7-4, 4-3 NSIC) quickly tied the game at six with a pair of threes from junior guards
Danielle Flood and
Alyssa Kerkhoff. The long balls sparked the UMD offense to 8-of-10 shooting from the floor in the first six minutes.
The Bulldog defense stifled the Golden Bear offense in the first 11 minutes and held a 24-20 advantage by holding Concordia-St. Paul to 36 percent shooting.
The Golden Bears responded with stifling defense of their own, using active hands on defense to jumpstart their offense. UMD would surrender their lead as mental mistakes caught up to the Bulldog club. UMD had 10 first-half turnovers and committed 11 personal fouls. The sloppy play helped propel Concordia-St. Paul to a 21-5 run to go ahead and take a 49-37 lead going into the half.
The Bulldogs tried to make a push in the second half but was unable to put a string of runs together to draw closer as Concordia eventually outmuscled UMD down the stretch and pulled away.
Ameshia Kearney and Rachel Hansen had 23 and 20 points, respectively to lead the Golden Bears. Concordia outscored UMD 50-26 in the paint and 15-6 in second chance points. UMD's bench contributed to 42 of the team's 63 points.
The Bulldogs will return the court tomorrow to seek their first win of the new year. UMD is set to battle Minnesota State University, Mankato at the Taylor Center. Opening tip is at 4:00 p.m.
