Austin Sikorski and the other 13 University of Minnesota Duluth seniors can now cross at least one entry off their collegiate football bucket list -- win at St. Cloud State University.
Sikorski closed out the scoring for the fourth-ranked Bulldogs Saturday afternoon by plowing in from two yards out and topping off a 44-21 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference triumph over the Huskies. UMD, which was winless in its last two visits to Husky Stadium and last prevailed there in 2008, is now 6-0 on the season.
After St. Cloud State jumped out to a fast 7-0 lead on its second play from scrimmage (a 39-yard scoring strike), the Bulldogs answered with 21 straight points, capitalizing on two Husky turnovers (fumbles) in the process and went into halftime up 21-14. Their foot remained firmly on the offensive pedal in the third quarter as a pair of
Drew Bauer touchdown passes and a 44-yard field goal from sophomore
Tyler McLaughlin all but put the game away. Bauer enjoyed perhaps his most productive afternoon as a collegian, throwing for 326 yards -- the highest total by a Bulldog since Ted Schlafke rolled up 350 yards in the 2007 season finale at St. Cloud State -- and two scores while completing 20 of 31 throws. He also ran for another touchdown and led both teams in rushing with 82 yards on 13 carries. That gave the Inver Grove Heights, Minn., native 406 total yards, a figure no UMD player has matched in seven years (Schlafke had 495 in that same 2007 clash with the Huskies.)
Junior running back
Logan Lauters added 72 yards and two more touchdowns for the fifth best ground yardage outfit in NCAA II football.
The Bulldogs limited the Huskies (2-4 overall) to just 115 total yards the entire second half and 309 yards on the afternoon. Only 58 of those yards came via the rush (on 26 tries). Senior inside linebacker
Gavin Grady led the Bulldogs' defensive charge with 10 total tackles while senior cornerback
Daryl Brown and junior free safety
David Boegel were in on eight and seven stops, respectively. In addition to recovering two Husky fumbles, the Bulldogs also picked off one pass (by sophomore reserve defensive end
Tim Sommer) and converted all three miscues into touchdowns.
UMD, which has now won 14 straight regular season games, will return to James. S. Malosky Stadium next Saturday afternoon (Oct. 18) for a Homecoming engagement with NSIC North Division comrade Northern State University.
