OFFENSE APLENTY FOR UMD IN 4-2 WIN OVER WAYNE STATE

The University of Minnesota Duluth scored three early goals to go up on Wayne State (Neb.) College in the first half and tacked on another late to secure a 4-2 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference victory in Wayne, Nebraksa on Saturday afternoon.

UMD (5-6-0, 5-3-0 NSIC) got a pair of goals from its leading scorer in the first half, and Wayne State (1-8-1, 0-7-0 NSIC) remained winless in conference play despite giving the Bulldogs a first-half run.

HIGHLIGHTS
• Senior forward Maureen Stormont scored a pair of goals and added an assist in the match, giving UMD its initial lead and later extending that in the first half. Along with an assist on Jennifer Smith's goal, Stormont had five points on the day bringing her to 114 for her career - 11 back of the pace set by Jen Warrick Reierson ('01) for most in a UMD career. Stormont's 47 goals are just five back from Warrick for the most in that category.
• Senior goalkeeper Marissa Rosa made six stops to preserve the victory for the Bulldogs, as Wayne tallied one goal during a flurry in front of the net and another on a penalty shot late in the first half.

Stormont put the Bulldogs on the board just two minutes into the game with her eighth of the season from the right side of the box, but Wayne State rebounded, mounting an offensive flurry against Rosa with three shots in just over a minute of action before Wildcats junior forward Josie Brown buried a cross from Kylie Hansen to knot the score. It did not take long for the Bulldogs to pull back ahead as Smith netted her first of the season just 21 seconds later, assisted by Stormont and Reiners. Not even a minute later, UMD would score again with Stormont drilling a pass from Marissa Ganske into the net to give them a two-goal cushion.

Wayne State would score again late in the period after the Bulldogs committed a foul in the box, setting up a penalty kick goal for McKenzie Hallstrom. Rosa would finish with four saves in the first half to maintain the UMD lead. Junior forward Sheridan Reiners showed her speed late in the second half, breaking away down the  right sideline and scoring her second of the season to put the game on ice for UMD. Wayne freshman Margaret Hama finished with four saves on the afternoon.
