Senior forward
Maureen Stormont netted a pair of goals as the University of Minnesota Duluth shut out Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference rival the University of Mary 3-0 at Malosky Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
UMD (6-8-0, 6-5-0 NSIC) rebounded from a tough loss Friday night and dominated play throughout the match, holding U-Mary (5-7-3, 3-6-2 NSIC) to just a pair of shots on goal in the match.
HIGHLIGHT• Stormont's two scores marked no. 51 and 52 of her career, bringing her within three points of tying the Bulldog program record for points, and tying the career goals mark -- each held by Bulldog assistant coach Jen Warrick Reierson ('01). Stormont currently has 122 career points.
• Senior midfielder
Jennifer Smith earned an assist on one of Stormont's goals and moved into a three-way tie for the third-most helpers in Bulldog history with 24 for her career. The record of 33 is held by Nicole Fietz ('03).
Senior midfielder/defender
Megan Helberg got the scoring started for UMD in the 37th minute, laying out to redirect a
Kelli Klun (Sr./D) free kick for her second of the season. UMD took the 1-0 lead to the locker room having allowed just one shot on goal in the opening frame, an easy stop for senior
Marissa Rosa, who needed just two saves to maintain her shutout though the Marauders had a near-score called back on an offsides call late in the match.
Stormont netted her pair of scores within four minutes of each other, in the 65th and 69th minutes, the first off a crossing pass from junior forward
Sheridan Reiners with a second assist by Smith, and the second off a feed from senior midfielder
Hannah Keil. Stormont nearly missed a hat trick when U-Mary keeper Shelby Buttron made a leaping save late in the game. Freshman midfielder
Hailey Hoff and senior defender
Riley Allen also had great chances stuffed late in the match as Buttron made eight saves to stifle the Bulldog offense any further.
UP NEXTUMD will play host to No. 1-ranked Minnesota State University Mankato under the lights of Malosky Stadium next Friday night at 6:00 p.m.
