Miami University twice took advantage of the man advantage -- the two-man advantage at that -- and launched its 2014-15 National Collegiate Hockey Conference season with a 3-2 road victory over the University of Minnesota Duluth.
In its first-ever confrontation with the Bulldogs in Duluth, the No. 10 RedHawks cashed in on a pair of 5-on-3 power play goals, the last coming with just under two minutes remaining in regulation that broke a 2-2 deadlock, and spent nearly a quarter of the game (13:33) with the man advantage. With the loss, No. 19 UMD dropped to 3-4-0 overall and 1-2-0 in the NCHC.
UMD took a 1-0 lead 15:37 into the first period when rookie
Karson Kuhlman took a centering feed from junior left winger
Cal Decowski and buried a one-timer from the low slot for his third goal of the year. On its first 5-on-3 opportunity of the evening, Miami (5-2-0 overall) evened the score on a redirect from Blake Coleman at 3:49 of the the second, but UMD answered 2:35 later with a power play goal of its own -- a wrister from junior defenseman
Andy Welinski from the right point that knuckled through traffic and over the shoulder of Miami netminder Jay Williams. Alex Wideman's even-strength goal with 7:56 left in that period made it 2-2 and that's the way it remained at the intermission break -- thanks in part to some nifty puckstopping work from Kasimer Kaskisuo. The rookie goalie made 16 saves (
including this highlight-reel stop) for the Bulldogs, who were outshot 18-5 during that 20-minute span. Kaskisuo (2-3-0) finished with 36 saves while Williams had 26.
The two teams will close out the two-game series Saturday night at AMSOIL Arena. All three UMD victories this season have come in second games of series and tournaments.
