NO. 19 BULLDOGS CLOSE OUT FOUR-GAME HOMESTAND ON A WINNING NOTE

Willie Raskob's first collegiate goal couldn't have come at a better time.

The University of Minnesota Duluth sophomore defenseman scored the game-winner with a missile from the high slot with 8:12 to go in regulation and the No. 19 Bulldogs held on to clip No. 10 Miami University 4-3 Saturday evening at AMSOIL Arena. With the victory, the fourth for UMD in four series/tournament rematch games this season, the Bulldogs evened their overall record at 4-4-0 and moved to 2-2-0 in National Collegiate Hockey Conference play.

The two clubs, who met for the first time ever in Duluth this weekend, exchanged even-strength first-period goals with Blake Coleman scoring for Miami at 3:20 and UMD senior right winger Justin Crandall answering at 15:06  (his first of the year and team-leading 28th of his career). The Bulldogs took their first lead of the series 35 seconds into the second period when junior right winger Alex Iafallo took a cross-ice pass from junior left winger Austin Farley and deposited the puck into a wide-open net. That 5-on-3 power play goal was followed up by a shorthander -- UMD's fifth already this season -- six minutes later by Andy Welinski, who worked a 2-on-1 with sophomore left winger Kyle Osterberg (the second of his three assists on the night) to perfection. Riley Barber's goal at 14:25 of the second period, which was awarded after a lengthy review by the referees, cut the Bulldog lead to 3-2. Miami, a 3-2 winner on Friday night, then got the equalizer 18 seconds into the third period and did so on a penalty shot by Coleman after Welinski was whistled for hooking. It marked the first time an opponent converted a penalty shot against UMD in nearly 20 years (University of Vermont's Eric Perrin on Dec. 3, 1994 in Duluth).

Rookie goaltender Kasimir Kaskisuo, making his fifth consecutive start, finished with 30 saves while his counterpart, Ryan McKay had 36 stops for Miami, which went 0-for-5 on the power play. UMD cashed in on two of its five man advantage opportunities with the man advantage and now has collected at least one power play goal in all eight games this season.

"Friday night was a tough loss, but to come back tonight and battle through some adversity was big," said Raskob, who  has 16 points in 42 career games. "The team showed a lot of character tonight."

After putting the wraps on a four-game homestand, UMD now will be on the road for four of its next five outings beginning with a pair of NCHC bouts next Friday and Saturday night with St. Cloud State University.
