A second-half comeback sent the University of Minnesota Duluth to overtime against Southwest Minnesota State University on Sunday afternoon, but the Mustangs slipped in a score late in the overtime session to edge UMD 2-1 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference match-up at Malosky Stadium.
UMD (4-6-0, 4-3-0 NSIC) fell short of a chance to return to .500 as Southwest Minnesota (6-4-0, 5-2-0) scored with just 1:14 remaining in the first overtime period.
HIGHLIGHTS•
Maureen Stormont continued to be the spearhead of the Bulldog offense, drilling a shot from 20 yards out to the far goal post for her seventh goal of the year. Her 109 career points secure second-place all-time in Bulldog program history outright for the senior forward. UMD out-shot SMSU 25-13 overall on the afternoon.
Stormont's score highlighted a Bulldog comeback after Southwest Minnesota State took the lead in the 33rd minute when Mustang junior forward Miranda Cadena netted her ninth goal of the season and third of the weekend. She was assisted by freshman Amanda Hartmann and junior Kendahl Fisher, who would tack on a helper on SMSU's game-winner later in the game. Senior Autumn Hayes slipped the late score through the Bulldogs defense to clinch the overtime win.
Senior goalkeeper
Marissa Rosa was steady between the pipes for UMD, with five saves - four in the second half - while also having the Bulldog defense stand strong with many would-be shots turned away before even reaching her. Meanwhile, SMSU sophomore 'keeper Brienna Dehkes was outstanding, making 12 saves on the afternoon, including nine in the second half to keep UMD from breaking the tie.
UP NEXTThe Bulldogs will head back on the road next weekend for the longest road trip of the NSIC season as UMD travels to Wayne State (Neb.) College and Augustana (S.D.) College for a pair of conference match-ups. Opening kick of the weekend is set for 1:00 p.m. Saturday in Wayne, Nebraska.
