NO. 2 UMD SCORES EARLY -- AND OFTEN -- IN RECORDING-BREAKING ROUT OF CROOKSTON

When Beau Boefferding darted 37 yards for a touchdown on the seventh play of the afternoon Saturday, that would ultimately be all the points the University of Minnesota Duluth would need in its Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference North Division road outing with the University of Minnesota Crookston. But for the No. 2-ranked Bulldogs, the scoring barrage had only just begun.

UMD reached the end zone on each of its seven first-half possession and went on to trounce the winless Golden Eagles 77-3, setting a program single-game record for points as well as jacking its regular season winning streak to 17 games. The Bulldogs also moved to 9-0 on the year with their 17th consecutive NSIC North Division victory and ninth straight triumph over Minnesota Crookston (0-9).

Senior Aaron Roth caught four touchdown passes -- one shy of both the UMD and NSIC records -- all from sophomore quarterback Drew Bauer while junior Logan Lauters and freshman Nate Beaulieu each ran for a pair of scores on Senior Day at Ed Widseth Field. Beaulieu, a Duluth Denfeld High School alumnus who joined the UMD program last spring, came off the bench to rush for a game-high 101 yards on just 13 carries. Zach Bassuener capped off the scoring by recovering a blocked punt (fellow redshirt freshman Karl Finkel did the honors) in the Golden Eagle end zone with 6:27 to go in regulation. The 77 points the Bulldogs finished with were one more than the previous UMD mark set against Minnesota State University-Moorhead on Oct. 3, 2009 and Minnesota Crookston on Nov. 1, 2002. Junior placekicker Andrew Brees also set  Bulldog single-game records for both extra point kicks (11) and attempts (11).

Bauer made good on 11 of 13 passes for 140 yards before calling it a day in the third quarter. His replacement, junior Eric Kline, went 1-for-3 with that one completion going for 24 yards and a touchdown to freshman Nate Ricci.

The Bulldogs sizably outgained the Golden Eagles in total offense (560-138), rushing yards (396-90), passing yards (164-48), first downs (33-7), and time of possession (36:43-23:17). Linebackers Gavin Grady and Beau Bates each had a team-leading five total tackles and were among 21 Bulldogs with a tackle on the afternoon .

UMD, which held down the No. 1 spot in the latest NCAA Division II Super Region Three Rankings, will be back at James S. Malosky next Saturday (Nov. 8) to face the University of Mary (5-4) in its 2014 regular season home finale.
