SECOND-RANKED BULLDOGS HOLD OFF MARY 53-35 IN REGULAR SEASON HOME FINALE

Sophomore Beau Bofferding scored on a three-yard scoring run nine plays after the opening kickoff and the University of Minnesota Duluth never looked back in a 53-35 Senior Day triumph over the University of Minnesota Duluth Saturday afternoon at James S. Malosky Stadium.

Bofferding went on rush for three more touchdowns while helping lead the No. 2 Bulldogs to their 18th consecutive regular season victory and push their overall record to a perfect 10-0. UMD, which is now 24-0 all-time against Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference North Division opponents at home, will close out the 2014 regular next Saturday at Minot State University (1-9). The Bulldogs also clinched at least a share of its seventh straight NSIC North Division championship.

The Bulldogs took a comfortable 34-7 lead into the halftime break, racking up 365 yards of total offense in the process. Mary battled back in the second half and got to within 13 points (41-28) early in the fourth quarter, but junior running back Logan Lauter's second touchdown run of the afternoon with 7:56 to go  but iced the victory -- UMD's eighth in eight lifetime meetings with the Marauders. Lauters wound up with 147 yards on 21 carries (his sixth 100-yard outing of the year) while Bofferding added 44 yards on just seven touches. Sophomore quarterback Drew Bauer completed 23 of 34 passes for 250 yards and a pair of scores -- including a 57-yard strike to junior wide out Justin Fowlkes in the opening quarter -- for the Bulldogs, who closed out the day with a season-high 575 total yards. Wide receiver Aaron Roth, one of 13 Bulldogs seniors who were recognized prior to the game, racked up a career-high eight pass receptions to pace UMD in that department.

With its run game grounded (15 yards on just nine attempts), the Maurders took to the air and amassed 421 yards (the most by a UMD opponent this season) and five touchdowns while going 32-of-57. Ten of those throws wound up in the hands of wide receiver Elby Pope, who parlayed them into 183 yards and a pair of scores.

Junior defensive backs Darion Fletcher and David Boegel led UMD defensively with six tackles each. Senior inside linebacker Gavin Grady was credited with five stops and came away with a nifty interception -- his second career theft -- late in the fourth quarter.

"We knew coming into the game that they were a pass-first team," said Grady, who has a team-leading 58 tackles on the year. "They were able to have some success and there are some things we'll have to correct going into next week."
