BULLDOGS BUCK BRONCOS SATURDAY TO CAP OFF WEEKEND SWEEP

After giving up an early goal, goaltender Aaron Crandall and the Bulldogs shut down Western Michigan the rest of the way Saturday
Box Score And the beat goes on.

The University of Minnesota Duluth continued its second-half surge and its climb up the PairWise rankings Saturday night by turning back Western Michigan University 3-1 in Kalamazoo, Mich. The Bulldogs overcame an early 1-0 deficit by scoring the game's final three goals for the second straight night while posting their second road sweep of the season. UMD, which has suffered just one loss in its last nine outings (6-1-2) improved to 12-9-3 overall and 7-6-1-1 in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference. The victory over the No. 20 Broncos (12-10-4; 6-7-1-1) also extended the Bulldogs' road unbeaten streak to seven games (6-0-1)

Coming into the Saturday's rematch, the Bulldogs had never won a game this season in which they trailed 1-0. That 0-6-1 funk came to an end thanks to even strength goals from senior right winger Joe Basaraba, rookie left winger Alex Iafallo and sophomore left winger Austyn Young. Basaraba wacked in his own rebound for his seventh goal of the year at the 15:27 mark of the first period -- nine minutes after Colton Hargrove had give the Broncos a 1-0 lead. A little over five minutes into the second period, Iafallo picked the pocket of a Western Michigan skater and potted what turned out to be the game winner. Midway through that same period, senior center Max Tardy and Young struck pay dirt on a 2-on-1 with Tardy feeding Young, who picked up his first goal as a Bulldog in his 20 career appearances. The assist snapped Tardy's 18-game pointless drought which stretched back to January 2012.

Senior Aaron Crandall was voted the game's No. 1 star after finishing the night with 32 saves, including 26 stops in the opening 40 minutes of play, while jacking his 2013-14 record to 10-6-2. His Western Michigan counterpart, Frank Slubowski.

The Bulldogs, who are 9-4-1 away from home this season, will be back at AMSOIL Arena next Friday and Saturday night to host NCHC rival Colorado College.

NOTES: Seven Bulldogs picked up one point each Saturday, including sophomore defenseman Willie Corrin, who had three assists in the series sweep ... Aaron Crandall, who has made nine consecutive starts (UMD is 6-1-2 during that stretch) and 11 straight appearances in goal, has equaled a career-best for victories with 10, duplicating his rookie year total ... UMD went 0-of-5 on the power play and 1-12 on the weekend while Western Michigan cashed in on just one of its 13 chances with the man advantage in the twin setbacks (0-of-6 Saturday) ...  Alex Iafallo, who was blanked in the points department last night, currently shares the team lead in scoring (19 points) and goals (10) ... The Bulldogs are now 7-1-0 lifetime versus Western Michigan and a perfect 4-0-0 in Kalamazoo ... Eleven of junior center Caleb Herbert's 19 points this season have been registered during the Bulldogs' seven-game unbeaten road streak. Herbert skated in his 100th collegiate game Saturday.
