RANGEY NO. 9 WILDCATS HOLD ON DESPITE KATRINA NEWMAN'S NEAR-RECORD

Danielle Flood (10) dribbles by Wildcat top shooter Jordan Spencer. The UMD junior finished with 18 points on the afternoon.
Box Score University of Minnesota Duluth senior forward Katrina Newman just missed a Bulldog single-game record for steals, as well as a triple-double, but No. 9 Wayne State (Neb.) College was too strong from long-range as the Wildcats knocked off UMD 81-69 at Romano Gym on Saturday afternoon.

Newman's nine steals fell just one short of Jheri Booker's Bulldog record from Jan. 16, 2009. Newman hauled in eight rebounds, all in the second-half and tossed in a game-high 23 points for UMD (10-10, 7-9 NSIC), but Wayne State (21-2, 14-2 NSIC) was nearly perfect from beyond the arc in the opening half: 9-of-10, as they opened an early  lead and held on despite a second-half run by the Bulldogs.

UMD held Wildcat leading scorer Jordan Spencer quiet in the first half, but she went 6-for-6 in the second to finish with 16 points, a team-high. Wayne needed it as their three-point game quieted to just 3-for-8 in the second half just as Bulldog junior guard Danielle Flood heated up. With 16 second-half points, Flood led a UMD charge out of the locker room that nearly tied the game as the Bulldogs pulled within 61-60 with just over seven minutes to go. From there, Wayne State regained control, opening the game back to 77-62 over the course of five minutes and held back the Bulldogs' final surge in the closing minutes to knock off UMD.

The Bulldogs held tight with the top-ranked Wildcats by forcing 21 turnovers, led by Newman's steals, but where Wayne made their mark was on the defensive end, hauling in 31 defensive rebounds compared to just 22 offensive boards for the Bulldogs. UMD shot just 32.0 percent on 75 shots, while Wayne was an efficient 25-for-40 (62.5 percent).

After enjoying an extended homestand the past two weeks, the tables turn for UMD as the Bulldogs hit the road for the next four, beginning with a trip to Aberdeen, S.D. to take on No. 23 Northern State in a rematch from one week ago. The Wolves knocked off UMD 70-59 at Romano Gym, and the Bulldogs will have revenge on their minds as that game tips off at 7:00 p.m. Friday evening.
